Interview with Derek Stupski

Owner, Head Coach at Stupski Fitness,
home of Binghamton Fit Body Boot Camp

“ Commit today. Don’t wait for the new year,
don’t wait for “Monday” or tomorrow. Do it now.”

At age 15 Derek realized how much work needed to be put into a fitness regimen, physically and emotionally, to elevate his athletic ability and make his dreams come true of playing baseball at a collegiate level. Fitness had a positive influence on his life, which helped boost his self-esteem and confidence.

Derek is extremely thankful for his father, as he influenced him through his own work ethics, and continued to push Derek, designing him workouts to follow. Once Derek started to see physical results and positive improvements on the field he was hooked. He started to do research, read articles, watch videos, looking for ways to keep improving and not plateau. This is the start of when Derek began making fitness regimens for himself, and his friends.

Derek received a scholarship to play ball at Long Island University. As a new student at LIU he met with an adviser and began the process to sign up for classes. His plan was to be a history teacher, but fate had a different plan. In the process of signing up, Derek stumbled across Exercise Science classes and education. With the impact fitness had on Derek’s life he was intrigued, and soon fell in love with the exercise science and health science programs.

After 4 years at LIU playing baseball, and an Exercise Science degree (completed with honors), Derek interned for the Newark Bears Baseball Club, as their strength and conditioning coach. Fast forward to present day at Stupski Fitness, Derek has a routine set for everyday of the week. This varies between training sessions, calls with the head of administration, personal workouts, marketing tactics and strategies, and reaching and exceeding goals for the gym and individuals training there. Derek is especially thankful for his staff,

“None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for my outstanding staff who continue to put in A+ efforts everyday and do their job so well.”

What is so important to remember when your are reaching a fitness goal is that Derek, is just like everyone else. He starts his weekly routine with hopes of lifting five to six days a week. But of course, life does get in the way. Derek expresses the importance of meal prep, and having a schedule and a program. Derek says the days that he fails to prepare a course of action for the day, are the days that he fails and makes bad decisions.

“I understand the busy life, but I also understand how taking just a little time at the beginning of the week to create a plan can make a huge difference in both my personal workouts and nutrition.”

Derek loves what he does, and it shows in his work. To change someone’s life in such a positive impact is what it is all about for him. Commitment is key. Derek’s biggest joy is watching an individual, including himself, reach a personal goal. Whether it be weight loss, winning a competition, or changing a persons outlook on life.
